Thursday April 18th horse racing tips

NEWMARKET

  • 3.00: Spycatcher 17/2 Each-way (1.5pts)
  • 3.35: Eben Shaddad 10/3 (1.5pts)
  • 4.10: Looking For Queen 9/1 each-way (1pt)

CHELTENHAM

  • 2.05: Juniper 9/2 (NAP - 2pts)
  • 3.15: Lady Adare 5/1 EW (1.5pts)

Spycatcher

The Abernant Stakes was won by Garrus last year by a head to Commanche Falls.

The winner hasn't quite been up to the same form since though, dropping 5lb in the weights since that victory.

Spycatcher goes really well fresh though and was in two Group 1 races in his last three outings, so shouldn't be ruled out here in great form.

And could be even better as a six-year-old with a tonne of experience and a great each-way price.

Eben Shaddad

Three runs as a two-year-old each encouraging in their own way too.

On debut he won easily at 4/1 before stepping up to a Group 3 only bumping into two classy horses in the process, Alyanaabi and Boiling Point. Each of which has boosted that race form.

Then last time out here over 7f he placed behind City Of Troy and Alyanaabi once again, confirming that his rating of 98 was far below his ability and also proving he can be a Group 1 horse.

As a three-year-old, with a first-time hood he should travel more efficiently and not be as keen, while stepping up in trip is bound to suit on the way he shaped in the Dewhurst last time out.

He stayed on well to keep third and faces tough opposition here, but among the favourites in a wide open contest.

Looking For Queen

Consistent as a two-year-old, this filly should be right up there based on her form in 2023.

She placed a close second to Circe at Doncaster on soft ground on her first start over 7f at 16/1.

Her second attempt at that will be much better and this filly to Churchill should thrive at around this distance having not quite been suited to the faster 6f sprints.

Circe went on to place in a Group 3 containing the 1000 Guineas contender Dance Sequence, so there's certainly hope she can return well enough to prove 9/1 a value each-way play.

Juniper

Two wins from two in 2024 and both have come under Harry Cobden for trainer Anthony Honeyball.

Both victories have come in Class 4 Handicap Chases for mares and she's showed real impressive form on both occasions to win by such margins.

Clearly in great fettle as a ten-year-old and shouldn't be discounted upped in the weights again as the handicapper tries to get a grasp on her potential.

Juniper's previous two races were last April in this where she came second to My Silver Lining, which has also proven to be decent form.

Lady Adare

1st on seasonal debut back in October at 3/1 and showed more improvement when second to Knappers Hill in November in the Grade 2 Rising Stars at Wincanton.

Pulled up in the listed mares chase at Exeter nine days after though, which seems to have just been too soon coupled with a 9lb rise.

Been rested since though and has all the makings of a mare on the up with 5/1 real value in a race like this even as the top-weight.
